PAKA, Dungun district - The turtle awareness roadshow which started in April in Kemasek, Kemaman district has now progressed to Paka town located in the Dungun district. Similar to the previous roadshow, this event is focused on inculcating the importance of turtle conservation to the local communities living side by side with these turtles.

The much awaited event was organised by the local community group, Persatuan Khazanah Rakyat Ma’Daerah (MEKAR) with the aim of raising awareness on turtles and instilling love and appreciation for these majestic ancient mariners. Visitors learned about turtles, their habitat, their plight for survival and the conservation efforts that are being carried out to save the species from extinction through exhibition booths, quizzes and regular announcements by the emcee. Visitors were also informed of the dangers of eating turtle eggs, which according to a study, could result in diarrhoea, kidney disorder, and in extreme cases, even death.

The event was livened up with exciting stories told by school children during the oration and story telling competition, a turtle-inspired fashion show and a dance performance by adorable children from the local kindergarten dressed in their traditional costumes. All the young participants were enthusiastic in conveying the importance of turtles and the need for their conservation through these events.

“It is indeed a great day for MEKAR’s awareness efforts. This event is able to highlight to the local community, especially the younger generation, the importance of turtle conservation. They will be the ones playing important roles in ensuring the success of turtle conservation in the future”, quoted chairman of MEKAR, Hj Amran bin Salleh.

This event has succeeded in conveying crucial messages to the local community on turtle conservation. They now have better understanding on the importance of ensuring the protection of these endangered species from extinction.
