Press Release - Sabah Biodiversity Integrated Information System (SaBIIS) and iSaBIIS Launching Ceremony
Kota Kinabalu, 26 July 2024 - Sabah Biodiversity Centre and WWF-Malaysia held the SaBIIS and iSaBIIS Launching Ceremony at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu. The launching ceremony was graced by Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Panglima Sr. Haji Safar bin Untong, JP, State Secretary of Sabah. Also in attendance were Yang Berbahagia Dr. Gerald Jetony, Director of Sabah Biodiversity Centre also the Chairman of the SaBIIS and iSaBIIS Launching Ceremony Organising Committee, Yang Berbahagia Datuk Ahemad bin Sade, Deputy State Secretary of Sabah (Development), Yang Berbahagia Datuk Frederick Kugan, Chief Conservator of Forests, Sabah Forestry Department, Yang Berbahagia Datuk Robert Stidi, Deputy Director General, Sabah State Civil Service Department (Development), Yang Berbahagia Dr. Robecca Jumin, Head of Conservation Sabah, WWF-Malaysia, Yang Berbahagia Puan Hajah Shariah Nelly Francis, Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Yayasan PETRONAS, heads and representatives of government departments and agencies and non-governmental organisations involved in biodiversity conservation and research activities in Sabah.
Sabah Biodiversity Integrated Information System (SaBIIS) is a database that aims to keep and provide accurate biodiversity information and data that can be useful in formulating local policy to ensure sustainable development of the State. The iSaBIIS is a mobile application with citizen science concept where the public can contribute to the data collection of the flora and fauna found throughout the State of Sabah. Both SaBIIS and iSaBIIS were developed by Sabah Biodiversity Centre with the support provided from Digital Heritage Sdn. Bhd..
During his launching speech, YB Datuk Seri Panglima Sr. Haji Safar bin Untong, JP stated the digital application system known as SaBIIS and iSaBIIS are developed as an effort to transform the state service as a Smart Digital Government. He added that SaBIIS and iSaBIIS can contribute to the government delivery system, particularly in decision-making for land use activities involving the State’s infrastructure development planning.
In conjunction with the Launching Ceremony, the State Secretary of Sabah also witnessed two other momentous events, the first being the Data Sharing Consent signing session between Sabah Biodiversity Centre and data providers consisting of Sabah Forestry Department, Department of Agriculture Sabah, Sabah Museum and WWF-Malaysia. The second event was the Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Sabah Biodiversity Center and Yayasan PETRONAS. Under the Memorandum of Understanding, Sabah Biodiversity Centre and Yayasan PETRONAS will embark on a five year collaboration on seagrass conservation in Sabah and also Malaysia as a whole. The memorandum will support Seagrass Mapping and Community-Based Programme in collaboration with Yayasan PETRONAS.
At the same ceremony, YB Datuk Seri Panglima Sr. Haji Safar bin Untong, JP had the opportunity to launch the Sabah Biodiversity Centre Strategic Plan 2022-2032.
