National Inter-Varsity Mock Trial Competition

International Islamic University of Malaysia, WWF-Malaysia and Sabah Law Society, in collaboration with Malaysian Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights are organising the first National Inter-Varsity Mock Trial Competition (NMTC) 2021. 

The aim of the competition is to promote Sustainable Infrastructure which is largely centred on people and society for the benefit of the environment, economy and society. It focuses on the possibility of public action through the initiation of public interest cases by preparing the legal fraternity with Mock Trial Competitions between higher institutions in Malaysia.

Details of the competition:
1. Date / Venue
Date : Round of 16 (23 October 2021)
Round of 8 (November 2021)
Round of 4 (December 2021)
Grand Finals (January 2022)
Venue : Online (Zoom)
● for Grand Final will be Online or Physical

2. Participation Requirements
Each institution will only be allowed to send one (1) team comprising five (5) participants. There is no registration fee imposed on the participating teams.
a) Participants must be registered as an undergraduate student at the institution
b) Participants of the same team must be from the same institution
c) Participants may comprise of students from other program of studies, not limited to students taking Laws programme

3. Format of the Competition
a) All rounds are knock-out rounds.
b) Each team must comprise of five (5) participants assigned to the following roles:
● Two (2) Counsels
● Two (2) Witnesses
● One (1) Instructing Solicitor
c) The case scenarios will be released one (1) month prior to the round. The case scenario for each round will be different.
d) In each room, there will be the Plaintiff’s team and the Defendant's team. This will be decided on the same day as the releases of the case scenario.
e) The case scenario will contain legal issues surrounding (but not limited to) matters related to environmental/tort laws in Malaysia.
f) The full set of the rules and regulations of the competition, as well as the scoring rubrics for each role will be provided after all participation from invited institutions are confirmed.

5. Prizes
● Cash prizes 
- Champion: RM 3000
- Runner Up: RM 2000, 
- Best Counsel: RM 200
● Individual and Challenge trophies, Certificates
● WWF-Malaysia merchandise worth:
- Champion: RM 700
- Runner Up: RM 450
- Best Counsel: RM 300
● Internship with:
- Law firm (5 slots for Champion)
- WWF-Malaysia (3 to 4 slots offered for Runner Up and Best Counsel)

6. Workshop - detailed briefing for the competition
Compulsory attendance to Workshop for the National Inter-Varsity Mock Trial Competition. More details will be distributed upon successful registration.

7. WWF-Malaysia Disclaimer
a) The Participant agrees to grant an irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive license to WWF-Malaysia and the organising committee of the national inter-varsity mock trial competition 2021 to distribute, display, share and edit video footage of the mock trial, images and names of participants and their affiliates connected with the Contest and the promotion of WWF-Malaysia’s conservation work. 

b) WWF-Malaysia and the organising committee of the national inter-varsity mock trial competition 2021 will not pay any fees for, nor bear any costs relating to participation in this contest. 

c) WWF-Malaysia and the organising committee of the national inter-varsity mock trial competition 2021 reserves the right to amend the contents of the invitation letter and the Rules and Regulation at any point of time with notice to participants.

d) WWF-Malaysia and the organising committee of the national inter-varsity mock trial competition 2021 reserves the right to modify or cancel the Contest or any of the arrangements, schedules, plans or other items directly or indirectly related to the Contest, at any time and for any reason it deems necessary with notice to participating teams and its affiliates. 

e) WWF-Malaysia and the organising committee of the national inter-varsity mock trial competition 2021, its agents, sponsors, representatives, affiliates and their respective directors, officers and employees, agents and assigns shall not be liable to any Participants or their affiliates in respect of any error, failure to win a prize in the Contest, defective prizes or misuse of prizes or any other loss, damages, costs,  expenses, claims, liabilities, injury, death, accidents suffered by the Participants or their affiliates during the Contest or arising out of or in connection with the Contest, the participation by the Participant in the Contest and/or the prizes awarded.
