16 October 2016, Penang: WWF-Malaysia collaborated with Penang State Government to successfully organise FINtastic Fun Run 2016 at Occupy Beach Street, George Town Penang on 16 October 2016. As part of the My Fin My Life campaign, this shark-themed five kilometre fun run attracted over 1,200 participants, and reminded Malaysians to the fact that the demand for shark fin is threatening not only the survival of sharks but also of the human race.

“The purpose of this event is to raise awareness on the importance of sharks in maintaining a balance in the marine ecosystem and sustaining our seafood. The decline of sharks will also affect human survival in the long run because seafood is one of Malaysian’s main protein sources,” said WWF-Malaysia Conservation Director, Dr. Sundari Ramakrishna.

“This event is not just another fun run; it gives participants the opportunity to voice out against shark fin consumption through their action. WWF-Malaysia encourages all participants to play an active role in the movement to protect sharks by not consuming shark fins and products,” she added.

YB Phee Boon Poh, Penang State Exco for Environment, Welfare and Caring Society, graced the FINtastic Fun Run 2016 in full support of saving sharks. The Penang State Government has been collaborating with WWF-Malaysia since January, with the My Fin My Life campaign launch, and a business dialogue in April, which focuses on calling for support from businesses, hotels and restaurants to stop serving shark fin soup.

YB Phee Boon Poh said, “Protecting Food Security in Bio-Diversity is part of our total commitments to the Earth Summit Rio Declaration to ensure the balance & sustainable development.”

The run started with the flag-off by YB Phee Boon Poh at 7.00a.m, followed by distribution of medals to participants who completed the run.

WWF-Malaysia expressed sincere thanks to Penang State Government, Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang, IPD Timur Laut, NM Galaxy (Run organising company), TIXTAC Malaysia, Orient Fitness, Hotel Jen, Penang Chinese Girl High School Drum Band, DJ Sham, iM4U, Universiti Sains Malaysia Scuba Club, and Penang volunteers, Malaysian Red Cresent, and RELA for joining hands in making FINtastic Fun Run 2016 a success.

WWF-Malaysia urged all parties to work together to protect our sharks. In order to reverse the present scenario of high shark-fin consumption, please visit myfinmylife.com and pledge online to say no to shark fin and shark-related products.
