WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL?
© Matthew Paley

Every part of the oil palm tree can be used - from the oil palm fruit, to the trunk of the oil palm tree, to the leaves. Palm oil also makes up almost 40% of all vegetable oil used globally and almost 70% of the oil traded each year – and it produces far more oil per hectare than any other crop.

However, growing oil palm unsustainably can lead to devastating deforestation and harm to wildlife, people and the climate. Sustainable palm oil is important because it fulfils increasing global food demand, supports affordable food prices and poverty reduction. It also safeguards communities and workers’ social interests, as well as protects the environment and wildlife.

OUR WORK ON SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL

As Malaysia is the second biggest producer of palm oil in the world, WWF-Malaysia has the responsibility to ensure that palm oil is produced sustainably and responsibly, so as to not harm or degrade the environment, and ensure our ecosystems and wildlife are protected.

WWF holds the position that we should work with the palm oil industry to support environmental conservation. We are working with a range of stakeholders and government agencies to develop standards and planting procedures that ensure the sustainability of palm oil production. In areas designated for palm oil plantations, we call on palm oil producers in Malaysia to strive for greater sustainability in the production of palm oil.

OUR POSITIONS ON SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL

In line with the WWF network, WWF-Malaysia believes that palm oil production doesn’t have to be destructive, and can be produced responsibly as a part of sustainable development. Responsible palm oil should be produced without causing deforestation, the conversion of natural ecosystems, environmental degradation, or the harming of wildlife.

To make sustainable and responsible palm oil a reality, WWF has positions on the call for palm oil boycotts, certification and stakeholder engagement, among others. These positions are updated every 2 years.
