Eco Champion Awards 2024
The Eco Champion Awards (ECA), organised by WWF-Malaysia's Education for Sustainable Development Programme, is a biennial celebration to award our young local environmentalists. Since 2017, we have been giving recognition to individuals who go the extra mile for the environment, and encouraging communities as well as local councils to support their green initiatives contributing to sustainable living.
What is the Eco Champion Awards?
Over the past years, we have seen many inspirational stories – from young students who started the school's organic vegetable patch to those who championed waste management issues in their community. Together, they have created a massive impact on sustainability and well-being within their communities and beyond.
Take a look at some of our previous ECA champions
This year, the ECA is embarking on this journey with a focus on tackling climate change and biodiversity conservation. We are seeking participants with a strong passion to initiate, drive and be involved significantly in efforts towards:
-
Community engagement and Empowerment,
-
Outreach and Education.
Climate Change
Climate change is the big thing now as global warming drives the global average temperature to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Rising global temperatures set off a chain reaction around the world, causing an increase in climate anomalies, sea level rise, food scarcity and imbalance of ecosystems, putting the environment and human wellbeing at risk. As youth, it is all the more important for us to take ownership and step up in action for the future that we are to inherit.
Conserving our Biodiversity
Biodiversity is all the different kinds of life you'll find in one area—the variety of animals, plants, fungi, and even microorganisms like bacteria. Since the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, humans, by the power of a single species, have managed to wipe out over half the organisms on Earth in a mere 200 years. Without conservation efforts in place, we are on the way towards a biodiversity crisis and threat of mass extinction. With Malaysia being a biodiversity hotspot, conservation of the ecosystems and biodiversity is of utmost importance.
Call for Proposals
With all these challenges in hindsight, what can we do as an individual or community to conserve and maintain a biodiverse world? From organising advocacy campaigns to empowering communities to increase climate resilience, there are many initiatives that you can invest in.
ECA 2024 is open for proposal submissions from 9 September until 7 October 2024.
Stand a chance to win an RM5,000 seed grant to kickstart your project!
Eligibility
