THE FORMATIVE YEARS

In 1980, the concept of sustainable development was first introduced in the ‘’World Conservation Strategy’’. This was published by WWF together with two other global environmental organisations. The report emphasised the importance of using natural resources sustainably and stressed the benefits of conservation for people – a principle that has guided WWF ever since.

Despite this longstanding focus, WWF is often thought of as the species organisation. Still. Even three decades since the name was changed in 1986 from its original "World Wildlife Fund". Since then, when WWF was 25 years young we have legally been the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Tigers are more than just magnificent animals - they are also crucial for the health of their habitats. A healthy tiger habitat ensures that nature is in harmony and can continue to provide food sources and clean water for us and for future generations. In saving tigers, we also save the biologically rich and diverse landscapes in which they still roam – Asia’s last great rainforests, jungles and wild lands. These forests are home to thousands of other species, people and the food, fresh water and flood protection that local communities need to survive.
