High Conservation Value Forest (HCVF) Toolkit for Malaysia

High Conservation Value Forest (HCVF) Toolkit for Malaysia. Malaysia now has its very own National HCVF toolkit that aims to provide practical guidance for forest managers and other stakeholders to identify, manage and monitor HCVFs in Malaysia. The national interpretation was developed through a consultative process involving experts and stakeholders representing Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak over a period of about 2 years. Download the National HCVF toolkit in Bahasa Malaysia or English here

Why HCVF? Forests contain not only economic value but also environmental and social values such as rare species, wildlife habitats, watershed protection, resources harvested by local communities and cultural significance. Areas with forest where these values have outstanding significance and critical importance can be defined as HCVF areas based on an agreed set of criteria. Therefore the key is to identify the High Conservation Values (HCVs) and to manage them in order to maintain or enhance its values.

The HCVF concept was initially developed by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for use in forest management certification in 1999 but the concept has now a number of other uses such as land use planning, policy commitments and conservation advocacy.

Now that the national interpretation is available, the next step is implementation on the ground by forest managers. WWF-Malaysia in its support towards the implementation of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) will provide technical advice and support in identifying HCVF areas in forests through our Global Forest and Trade Network (GFTN) members.
