Green Roads and Highways: Protecting Biodiversity

Roads and highways play a crucial role in a country’s development by driving development and serving as the main mode of transport. In Malaysia, new roads are especially important in rural areas to provide access to new areas, leading to development, job creation, and the building of new housing areas. The existing road and highway planning process considers multiple factors such as geography, topography, demand, soil conditions, land acquisition cost, and engineering requirements to optimise the alignment and design of the proposed new road or highway. Unfortunately, biodiversity is only considered at later stages of the planning cycle, namely during the EIA stage, and at this point, the project’s budget has already been determined which makes it difficult to implement biodiversity-related mitigation measures as these usually incur significant cost and time.
This training module was created as a joint project between WWF-Malaysia and Aurecon Lestari Sdn Bhd to harmonise infrastructure development and biodiversity protection. This first step focuses specifically on roads and highways to enhance awareness and build capacity amongst key industry players to incorporate biodiversity conservation into the planning and design of roads and highways.
