Environmental Citizenship Survey completed

WWF-Malaysia started the Environmental Citizenship Survey in September 2006 in collaboration with various partners from the educational & environmental sector, in hope that it would lead to the improvement of environmental practices among Malaysians. This survey yielded 8499 responses

We started our Environmental Citizenship Survey* in September 2006. We interviewed 80 primary and secondary schools, 28 teacher training institutes, 40 businesses and industries organisations, 21 media organisations, 18 environmental and non-environmental non-governmental organisations, 17 matriculation centres, universities and university colleges, 55 government agencies, departments and divisions from four ministries and 291 politicians. Befittingly, a study of this magnitude included people from diverse socio-economic and political background to show the multifaceted opinions and views on the environment and its issues.

Hard copy survey forms were used during the survey that was administered through face-to-face or direct mail. We also conducted an online survey.

The first phase of the survey, which ran from August to November 2006, kick-started in 80 primary and secondary schools in 10 states in Malaysia; Johor, Melaka, Selangor, Perak, Pulau Pinang, Perlis, Terengganu, Pahang, Sabah and Sarawak. We reached out to teachers, non-teaching staff, students, and parents. Our researchers travelled to the most remote schools set in oil palm plantations, as well as to the urban schools in Malaysia.

In the second phase (from January to June 2007), we continued with the survey via online, direct mail and conducted face-to-face interviews with the rest of the listed target groups.

We owe much of our success to the continuous support from our collaborative partners:
  • Curriculum Development Division (CDD)
  • Teacher Training Division (TED)
  • Educational Planning and Policy Research Division (EPRD)
  • Department of Environment (DOE)
  • Universiti Malaya (UM)
  • Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)
  • Universiti Putra Malaysia (UKM)
  • Global Environment Center (GEC)
This survey has yielded 8499 responses out of the targeted 13,000 with the help from Malaysians who had opened their doors and participated in this study. The results of this study will open up many avenues, one of which could lead to the improvement of environmental practices among Malaysians especially our children, who will one day inherit this earth from us.
