28 March 2025, Petaling Jaya – Earth Hour has been WWF’s flagship event for the past 20 years, with Malaysia participating in the campaign since 2009 as a Lights Off event symbolising our commitment to sustainability and nature conservation by switching off non-essential lights for an hour from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. It represents a small but meaningful step towards a larger commitment to care for our planet, inspiring millions to take action to protect nature.

In 2025, supporters from over 118 countries and territories collectively dedicated nearly three million hours, demonstrating an inspiring show of unity and commitment in addressing the twin crises facing our planet, climate change and nature loss.

According to reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services reports, the planet has already warmed by approximately 1.1°celsius since pre-industrial levels and is on course to exceed the 1.5°celsius global temperature limit set by the Paris Agreement in 2030. These findings underscore the critical need to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, to prevent catastrophic consequences for people and nature.

In light of this, WWF-Malaysia's Earth Hour theme for 2026, For Nature, For Us. For What’s Next, underscores the power of collective and individual action in safeguarding our planet for current and future generations because every action, no matter how small, makes a difference. From making conscious everyday choices to advocating for systemic change, each effort plays a vital role in building a resilient future where people and nature thrive together.

In celebration of Earth Hour 2026, and for the first time since 2019, WWF-Malaysia is bringing the public together for a larger-scale event featuring a Scavenger Hunt, a weekend bazaar, and the symbolic Lights Off moment on Saturday, 28 March 2026, at Piazza, Pavilion Bukit Jalil.

“We have come a long way since the first Earth Hour took place in Sydney, Australia in 2007,” said Sophia Lim, Executive Director / CEO of WWF-Malaysia. “Over the past two decades, millions of people around the world have united in what has become the biggest hour for Earth. At WWF-Malaysia, we remain committed to inspiring and empowering individuals to embrace greener, more sustainable lifestyles as we work together to address the environmental challenges we face today.”

The Lights Off event featured an exciting line up of live music and performances by Asyraf Nasir, Sunway Dance Club accompanied by Colour of Sounds, and Badarsila Gamelan Group. The drummers of the Colour of Sounds inspired everyone to get on their feet and join the Earth Hour Dance for Nature, bringing the crowd together in celebration.

The highlight of the evening was the symbolic #BiggestHourforEarth in the dark, where non-essential lights in Piazza, Pavillion Bukit Jalil were switched off in solidarity with the global Earth Hour movement.

With WWF-Malaysia’s goals in mind, Earth Hour highlights the power of collective action and cultural storytelling from the mobilisation of global communities. This act of switching off non-essential lights remains a powerful visual symbol of commitment to our planet, deepening the sentiment to call for urgent, systemic change, leading communities beyond the hour to take greater actions.
 
With Earth Hour, WWF-Malaysia and Malaysians stand together, a powerful testament to the strength and resilience of a global movement committed to protecting our planet and all life on Earth.
