Press Release: WWF-Malaysia and BCSD Malaysia Unite to Accelerate Plastic Circularity in the Private Sector

30 October 2025, Kuala Lumpur — The Business Council for Sustainable Development Malaysia (BCSD), in partnership with WWF-Malaysia, convened the Forging a Circular Future: Advancing Supply Chain Circularity Across Malaysia’s Plastic Ecosystem Stakeholder Forum at Palm Garden Hotel, Putrajaya. The event brought together representatives from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), policymakers, business leaders, recyclers and civil-society partners to accelerate Malaysia’s transition toward a circular plastics economy through structured dialogue and collaboration across the value chain.

The forum was officiated by Mr. Mahadi bin Sukarno, Deputy Under Secretary, Environmental Management Division of NRES who highlighted the Government’s ongoing commitment to drive Malaysia’s Plastic Sustainability Roadmap 2021–2030 and the forthcoming National Circular Economy Policy.

In June 2025, WWF-Malaysia and BCSD introduced the WWF Plastic Circularity Digital Toolkit. Since then, more than 85 companies have participated in sector-specific clinics to benchmark their practices and identify value-chain gaps. Insights from these sessions culminated in today’s forum which convened policymakers, industry players and recyclers to assess sectoral readiness and outline actionable recommendations supporting Malaysia’s circular economy and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) transition.

The Stakeholder Forum aims to transform these findings into collective dialogue and policy alignment. Sophia Lim, Chief Executive Officer of WWF-Malaysia in her recorded message, highlighted the need for collective action between civil society and industry to align their efforts through measurable goals and supportive policies, emphasising shared responsibility and collaboration. She stated that circularity thrives when practical action and public awareness come together, linking daily choices with environmental responsibility and community collaboration.

“Embedding circular practices—such as integrating recycled materials, strengthening waste management systems, and advancing sustainable product design—creates tangible business value while reducing risks and driving positive environmental and social outcomes. Through the Plastic Circularity Clinics, we’ve seen that meaningful progress requires not only business innovation but also strong alignment between policy and industry. Scaling systemic change toward a circular economy depends on consistent, transparent, and credible measurement, reporting, and disclosure of circularity performance. This enables companies to demonstrate real impact, attract investment, and enhance their market competitiveness.”, said Stefanie Braukmann, Director, Business Council for Sustainable Development Malaysia (BCSD Malaysia)

By linking national policy direction with on-the-ground industry action, the Plastic Circularity Programme demonstrates BCSD and WWF-Malaysia’s commitment to supporting our circular economy roadmap. The forum fostered upstream-to-downstream collaboration and catalysed coordinated action across sectors to accelerate Malaysia’s circular economy transition.
