Joint Press Release: Stride for Stripes: WWF-Malaysia and Maybank’s 'Run For Tigers'
Stride for Stripes: WWF-Malaysia and Maybank’s "Run For Tigers" aims to address human wildlife conflict this Global Tiger Day 2025
- Fun run event continues to shine spotlight on the importance of tiger conservation
In conjunction with Global Tiger Day 2025, WWF-Malaysia and Maybank announce the return of “Run For Tigers”, a 3.5 km Fun Run aimed at raising public awareness and support for the conservation of the critically endangered Malayan tiger.
The event, which will take place on Saturday, 26 July 2025, at Padang Semarak, Putrajaya Wetlands Park, will provide a meaningful opportunity for Malaysians to run in unity and harmony with nature and hope for tigers, especially at a time when the country grapples with increasing issues of human-wildlife conflict.
This year’s theme spotlights the urgent need to move from conflict to coexistence, following a number of tragic encounters between humans and wildlife over the past year. As development encroaches into tiger habitats, communities and animals alike are placed at greater risk -underscoring the importance of holistic conservation.
“Tiger conservation is about more than just preventing extinction; it is about securing a balanced future where both people and wildlife can thrive,” said Sophia Lim, CEO and Executive Director of WWF-Malaysia. “The Malayan tiger is a symbol of our natural heritage, and its survival hinges on how well we can address human-wildlife conflict and shift towards a future of coexistence. Through collective effort, awareness, and compassion, we can build that future together.”
The partnership between WWF-Malaysia and Maybank, which began in 2016, continues to support critical conservation interventions, including the protection of tiger populations, increasing prey availability, empowering Orang Asli communities, and strengthening Conservation Assured Tiger Standards (CA|TS) management. Over the years, these continued efforts led to the deployment of over 100 rangers across more than 70,000KM of dense forest, resulting in the deactivation of 240 active snares.
“From conflict to coexistence – that is the path we must pursue,” said Izlyn Ramli, Head of Group Corporate Affairs Maybank and CEO of Maybank Foundation. “Through our collaboration with WWF-Malaysia, we are not only safeguarding wildlife but also fostering safer environments for people living near forests. By investing in anti-poaching patrols, ecological monitoring, and community engagement, we are demonstrating how responsible corporate partnerships can help address long-term conservation challenges. The 'Run For Tigers' is more than just a fun race, it is another powerful step towards protecting one of the world’s most iconic species and in doing so, protects a multitude of other animals. We hope that every stride we take brings us closer to a future where tigers will thrive in the wild.”
At the event, visitors will also get to experience numerous family-friendly activities from a Zumba session, carnival games, photo wall, food trucks and interactive programmes related to Malayan Tiger conservation efforts. Participants can choose to dress up as any wild animal or even plant species found in the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex in the "Run with Your Costume On" contest, for a chance to win a cash prize.
Register today for Run For Tigers 2025 and join a movement committed to saving the Malayan tiger. RM10 from every registration will directly support WWF-Malaysia’s tiger conservation efforts.
