Sankina Aquaculture Case Study

The aquaculture industry offers significant potential for food security and economic growth, but unsustainable practices can lead to serious environmental and social consequences. To address these challenges, WWF-Malaysia launched the Aquaculture Improvement Project (AIP) in 2014, a stepwise approach aligned with Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) principles, aimed at supporting farms in adopting environmentally sustainable, socially responsible, and traceable practices. One example is Sankina Aquaculture Sdn Bhd in Tawau, which joined the AIP in 2019 to improve its Pacific whiteleg shrimp operations. Over three years, Sankina implemented changes guided by environmental and social impact assessments, complemented by biosecurity enhancements through Malaysia Good Aquaculture Practices (MYGAP). The farm’s efforts led to better waste management, improved community welfare, mangrove conservation, and increased biodiversity, including more migratory bird sightings. These achievements culminated in Sankina becoming the first shrimp farm in Malaysia to receive ASC certification in 2023, while also being MYGAP-certified in 2022 - showcasing how collaborative initiatives like the AIP can drive responsible aquaculture and open access to sustainable seafood markets.
