CURRENTS: WWF-Malaysia Marine Newsletter for Oct-Dec 2013
Highlights from this issue includes standards set for popular farmed seafood namely Groupers, Seabass and Baramundi at the Sustainable Aquaculture Dialogue, signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between the Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD), The Reef Dive Resort and Tours, and Sipadan Pom-Pom Island Resort and Tours for turtle management in Semporna, the National Essential Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (NE-EAFM) Training for DOFM, DOFS, and Sabah Parks officials, Handicraft workshop with the Hawksbill Eco-Club in Melaka as well as the Anti-Fish Bombing campaign in SK Bangau-Bangau, Semporna. 2013 also turned out to be a hectic yet rewarding year for our turtle conservation work, with 7 turtles tracked and more eggs succesfully incubated.
This issue also features a very interesting marine conservationist - Pak Damsek from Semporna. Former Fish Bomber, now reformed Reef Protector tells his conservation journey which started after witnessing the unfortunate explosion of his friend and caused him to turn over a new leaf.
We sincerely thank you for your continuous support toward our marine conservation efforts. May the new year bring more positive changes to ensure a healthier marine environment in Malaysia.
Happy Chinese New Year to all those celebrating and Happy Holidays!
