UUM Switches Off Lights for Earth Hour
Partaking in this world initiative in support of WWF-Malaysia, we organized Earth Hour in UUM to encourage students to switch off the lights for 60 minutes on that night. To ensure that as many students as possible would learn about this event, we used social media and collaborated with the representatives of the Students Residential Hall to put up posters in these halls and in lecture halls to spread the news.
At 8:30pm, almost every Student Residential Hall in UUM turned off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness of the need to take action on climate change. The students gathered with candles and each representative organized activities. We successfully collected 1682 pledges and surveys regarding the recycling and energy consumption habits amongst our students in just two days!
Environmental movements are reaching a significant moment. We are well past the point where going green is novel. I believe every action, big and small, counts. Explorer Robert Swan, the first man to walk to both Poles, once said: “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it”. Which is why we, the students of UUM, support Earth Hour.
