Ma’ Daerah is one of the few good nesting sites for Green turtles and this partly due to the surrounding Bukit Labohan hills that guards the beach against development and other forms of human intrusion. Despite this, serious challenges still exist.
- There is a lack of strict laws and enforcement to prevent the sale of turtle eggs in the market
- The local community lack understanding of why turtles are important to them – particularly in terms of eco-tourism and conservation
- Ma’ Daerah has yet to be made a turtle sanctuary
- Fishing nets have been known to kill adult turtles as they feed in the seas and during egg laying season as they come to shore
Getting local communities to collectively lend their voice in advocating for the gazettement of Ma’ Daerah as a turtle sanctuary is another approach to address these issues.
