Wildlife Assessment and Monitoring in Sustainable Forest Management (WAMSFM)

Wildlife-friendly logging practices

Current forestry practices do not fully take into account the welfare of wildlife and may pose a threat to their continued survival and reliance on forest resources. The main goal of this project is to develop a guideline to assess and monitor wildlife with regard to logging practices for sustainable forest management.

At the end of this process, it is hoped that this WAMSFM guideline will be adopted by the forestry sector and applied in all logging concessions in Peninsular Malaysia.

Three major steps are needed:

  • Review of the current Peninsular Malaysia forestry guidelines, specifically in relation to wildlife conservation, and its necessary recommendations
  • Development of a wildlife assessment and management monitoring guideline for forestry practices in Peninsular Malaysia
  • Engagement of stakeholders in jointly developing, testing, and implementing these guidelines
The results will be used to develop a draft document on WAMSFM.
