Logging effects on orang-utan habitat

Of important consideration is the logging operations and silvicultural practices that are implemented during and after timber harvesting as this will directly affect the quality of forest used by orang-utans. In most cases, when the canopy is opened due to logging, pioneer tree species grows first compared to the dipterocarp trees that orang-utans depend on.

Given the limited resources available for forest restoration and rehabilitation, the choices to make and the techniques to use will require some initial study. Various aspects of forestry, such as densities of strangling figs which is an important orang-utan food, whether to restore severely degraded forest sites or less degraded sites first, etc. need to be considered.
