Counting the Humphead Wrasse: Towards a Revised Quota
In a continuing effort to achieve a lower quota for the number of Humphead wrasses allowed to be exported by Malaysian companies, a Non-Detrimental Finding (NDF) study was conducted from March to May this year. The study is part of a larger programme funded by TRAFFIC-Southeast Asia, and includes collaboration with Department of Fisheries Sabah, and WWF-Malaysia.  » Read more

Responding to a report from a local dive operator about the outbreak of Crown of Thorns (COTs) in reefs off Si Amil Island, Semporna team members Daniel and Nina headed out to investigate the situation. Mabul Marine Week: Mabul Dive Operators Come Closer Together for Good of Environment
The strong competitive nature that exists amongst resort owners and dive operators on Mabul Island was put aside during Mabul Marine Week (19-26 July 2008), a week focused on protecting the marine environment. Mabul Marine Week is an up-scaled version of Mabul Marine Day, an event celebrated over the past 10 years which is the brain-child of Sipadan Water Village Resort. » Read more

Mabul Island Leads the Way
With full endorsement by the District Office of Semporna as stated through the Semporna Tourism Action Council, the Mabul Clean-up Committee was formed, chaired by our very own Team Leader, Daniel Doughty. Committee members consists of tourism operators based on Mabul Island, the local PGA (police front-liners), village leaders and WWF-Malaysia’s Semporna Priority Conservation Area Project Team. » Read more

Regatta Lepa-Lepa, Culture on Display
The Regatta Lepa-Lepa is an annual event held to highlight the Bajau community. More specifically, it highlights the age-old seafaring East Coast Bajau’s strong skills in boat craftsmanship. Held over three days this year, from 18th – 20th April, activities included the magnificent parade of the lepa boats (hand-crafted vessels, adorned with its colorful sail, known as the sambulayang), local ethnic music and dance performances, and the search for the beauty queen, Ratu Lepa. » Read more
