The Semporna Peninsula priority conservation area is globally significant for its rich mix of habitats (coral reefs, seagrasses, mangroves, and open sea), the presence of endangered species such as dugong and sea turtles and its rich fisheries.  It is home to largest concentration of coral reefs in Malaysia, including the world-famous diving destination of Sipadan Island and the 350km2 Tun Sakaran Marine Park.

The Tun Sakaran Marine Park - gazetted in 2004 - is the largest marine protected area in Malaysia at 350km2.  It is unique in Malaysia as it has people living within its boundaries and is a multiple-use area designed to protect biodiversity and manage fisheries.  Residents of the park are allowed to fish in designated zones and grow seaweed in others.  Sipadan Island will also become a marine protected area soon.

WWF-Malaysia works closely with local communities on the islands to build capacity for managing their natural resources in a sustainable manner.
