Snorkeling & Marine Conservation
As part of its ongoing nature awareness programmes, primary students from Karakit were given a half day lesson on snorkeling. The event, held June 21 on Maliangin Island, involved the organizational skills of the Banggi Youth Club members. Apart from getting accustomed to using snorkels and masks, the students were also taught about the importance of marine conservation.
Beach Clean-ups
Shaping the younger generation into citizens who are conscious of the environment is the main aim of the Banggi Environmental Awareness Centre. One of the regular activities held are the clean-ups, the latest one on 17 May which targeted the main jetty in Karakit and the football field in Perpaduan Village, both on Banggi Island. 200 kilograms of trash was collected, including 30 kilograms of recyclable items. The event was co-organized by WWF-Malaysia and Banggi Youth Club members, and supported by FELCRA staff who assisted in disposing the non-recyclable trash. Such activities aim at ensuring the younger generation adopts the 3Rs - reduce, reuse and recycle.
