Gunung Stong State Park - Little-known Gem

An area of outstanding natural beauty in Kelantan, the proposed Gunung Stong State Park is dominated by the spectacular Jelawang Waterfall, one the tallest waterfalls in Malaysia. The area is listed as a priority site for gazettement and development as a state or national park in the National Ecotourism Plan. The Gunung Stong area is a water catchment for the Kelantan River and plays an important role in flood and drought regulation.

Gunung Stong contains many plants that are found nowhere else. Endemic plants found here include Licuala stongensis (a fan palm found only on Gunung Stong), and the rare bamboo, Holttumochloa pubescens (also found only on Gunung Stong).

The Kelantan State Government has declared its commitment to gazette an area of 21,950 ha, corresponding to Gunung Stong Tengah Forest Reserve, as a state park.

WWF- Malaysia has prepared a preliminary management plan for the Gunung Stong State Park and this was submitted to the Kelantan State government in December 2006.
