Investing in a ‘greener’ generation

A developed and sustainable Malaysia must make provisions to create a culture of Environmental Citizenship, especially among our young. Investing in educating Malaysia’s youth towards this ideal - where environmentally educated people translate their knowledge of nature and conservation into responsible, environmentally-conscious actions - is both crucial and far-sighted.

An environmentally-literate public will be informed about, educated in and responsible towards the environment. They recognise the value and are aware of how their actions may influence it, and this in turn will lead to a more sustainable future.

Environment and You (E&Y) is a pilot project to:
  • raise environmental values and ethics in school children.
  • develop skills amongst them on the importance of conservation within the context of the overall quality of life.
  • to help children think and act in environmentally-friendly ways.

Infusing environmental education into the curriculum and real life
E&Y aims to develop an Environmental Education Model (EEM). EEM is expected to enhance the infusion of Environmental Education (EE) into the national curriculum for replication in Malaysian schools by 2010. This will see WWF-Malaysia becoming more pro-active in its effort to create a ‘greener’ generation of young Malaysians.

It is not enough for EE to be taught only in the classroom. It should be taken outdoors, so that there is an extension of the learning experience into real life. This way, the environmental and conservation knowledge becomes hands-on, practical and contextual.

WWF-Malaysia will be developing collaborative partnerships with the government and other NGOs in making the EE programme real in the National Education System. Through this five-year project, the learning outcome through the enhanced infusion of EE in the curriculum will be tracked in 4 selected schools from 4 states (Perak/Penang, Malacca, Selangor and Terengganu/Pahang).
