Sustaining highland biodiversity and endemic species
Fraser’s Hill is one of the few pristine forests left in Malaysia. The amazing diversity of plant and animal species at this hill resort include at least 836 species of seed plants with 31 species that are endemic to Peninsular Malaysia. Of the highland fauna found in Peninsular Malaysia, Fraser’s Hill contains 62.65% of the mammal, 88.42% of bird, 51.92% of reptile and 86.67% of the amphibian species. This hill resort provides important ecological functions and water resources for the benefit of all Malaysians.
The ultimate goal of this project is the continuing conservation of Fraser’s Hill and its rich biodiversity. It is important to properly manage Fraser’s Hill to ensure that it does not lose its uniqueness as an unspoilt nature getaway and bird sanctuary. A local community interest group - Fraser’s Hill Environmentally Sustainable Heritage (FRESH) - was formed in 2004 to bring about a green Fraser’s Hill town centre, conserve the rich biodiversity at this hill resort and play a key role in long-term conservation by:- bringing about lifestyle changes that are more eco-friendly
- improving existing nature trails for recreation and education
- enhancing the local communities’ relationship with government stakeholders to influence for nature-friendly decisions
- capacity building as well as hands-on activities (composting, water and energy conservation, waste management, tree planting, etc.)
