Asean Declaration Brings New HopeWWF-Malaysia warmly applauds the November 20 Declaration made by the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on regional environmental sustainability.
This Declaration, signed on the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of ASEAN and the 13th ASEAN Summit in Singapore serves to provide an impetus to ongoing efforts in the field of conservation.
WWF-Malaysia takes great satisfaction in noting the depth and details embodied in the ASEAN declaration, particularly over the declared intentions to "promote conservation and sustainable management of key ecosystems, including forest, coastal, and marine habitats, such as coral reefs, through initiatives, in particular, the Heart of Borneo, Forestry Eleven forum, and the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security."
The Heart of Borneo and the Coral Triangle Initiatives would especially require concerted regional cooperation between governments and stakeholders in order to achieve the conservation objectives contained within it. WWF-Malaysia looks forward to working closely with the relevant governments on these large-scale initiatives.
