PRESS STATEMENT - WWF-Malaysia applauds State Government’s Protection of Kota Kinabalu Coastal Areas
Any development along the coasts of Sabah should not be at the expense of natural ecosystems found along the coast. Mangroves, coastlines and coral reefs provide buffers to natural disasters and climate change impacts, such as tsunami and sea level rise. Even without human intervention and development, these ecosystems are already under pressure. We should avoid any coastal development where possible, and no further reclamation should be allowed within Kota Kinabalu coastal areas.
We hope that such protection will be extended to other ecologically sensitive areas throughout the whole state, beyond Kota Kinabalu coastal areas.
